She has thought up a million different ways to get away from them, but lacked the motivation and the sheer will. Like a fast moving tornado, her motivation comes in the form of a boy who cares for her as none other has and who shows her a glimpse of hope, a glimpse into a life she never thought she could have.
But is her new motivation enough to get her out….
I received this book from Ms. Felix herself when she offered 2 lucky Facebook followers the chance at a free copy by commenting on her post! I was the first to comment and was excited to get my hands on this book. I was also nervous. Reading about abuse is never easy. I cannot imagine a life where your parents treat you this way, as I definitely grew up in a home with lots of love. So to start, I was worried about reading something of this nature. I’ve read a lot like it – most notably Heart On A Chain. While this was not the same caliber of abuse, it was certainly still very sad but also inspiring.
Jenna is used to living with her parents’ disdain of her. Her existence at all pisses them off, and while they want nothing to do with her most days, they don’t shy away from using her to care for her younger sister so they can leave the house for mysterious reasons at all hours of the night. Then she meets Carlos at school, and what unfolds between them is so very beautiful. I read in the opening of this book the author’s acknowledgment to her husband – saying how she loves being able to tell the story of how they came to be. That being said, if this is her story, more power to her. I love the idea of actual truths being told, and knowing that in such a horrible situation, good happens in the real world. If she indeed married the real life Carlos, then she is one lucky chick.
There were so many really beautiful moments in the story, but at times I did feel like it was not as fleshed out as it could be. Sometimes I felt like I was being told, rather than really experiencing the story. I wanted more. That especially goes for the end. We got a lot of build up, and I was really getting into the story even more, and then I noticed I was at 98% and I had to check to make sure that the book was indeed downloaded correctly. Not to say it didn’t end well, or that I didn’t enjoy it, because I certainly did. I just wanted more from the story and from the characters. This story is hopeful. It takes readers on a journey, and makes them realize that a love like this is real and possible.
I give this book 4 stars and recommend to anyone looking for a touching story with the perfect sort of hero. There’s a lot to be learned from Emerge and if this is Lila’s personal journey, then thank you to her for giving this to us and allowing us in on her experiences. I look forward to seeing what she creates in the future.
