By accident, he discovered long ago that he was adopted as a baby and his need to find his biological father has consumed him ever since. Now, on a road trip, determined to find his father and his sanity, and armed with locations and his cousin, Nixon, to help him, maybe he can find the answers he’s been searching for. With nothing but a suitcase and a wad of cash to get him there, lead after lead takes him further from home.
But he’ll find much more than he intended.
He finds Storey, a pint sized pin-up model who has learned painful lessons about guys. Her wounds run deep, but so do his. She knows what she wants, but will she recognize it when it’s right in front of her?
Maddox can’t touch anyone without feeling like his skin is crawling, but just maybe his instinct to protect this amazing girl will supersede his own hang-ups.
If he can brush her skin and start to feel alive inside…everything will change.
This is just killing me – literally killing me. I wanted to give this Down N Derby more than 3 stars. I desperately wanted to, but I just couldn’t. I absolutely positively LOVED the first two books in this series. This one just didn’t do it for me. It was a sweet story, but something was missing. Not enough angst or drama I guess. That’s even hard to say because really there was a lot going on … ugh. I don’t know.
Maddox Black found out at the ripe old age of 8 that he was adopted by Sylvia and Chance Black. He is the son of Sylvia’s twin sister who passed away when Maddox was only 5 months old. Sylvia promised to raise him as her own son and she kept that promise. After graduating high school, Maddox makes it his mission to find his birth father. Leaving in the middle of the night with his cousin Nixon, he travels the country looking for the father he never knew. He finds more than a possible father figure on his travels.
Since he found out about his adoption, Maddox hasn’t been able to touch anyone without feeling like little bugs are crawling under his skin. That is until he meets her – Storey Delilah Kane. She’s the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen. He’s so infatuated by her that he’s afraid to touch her for fear that he’ll feel those creepy little bugs. Storey is different, and she may be just what Maddox needs to deal with his inner demons.
Meanwhile, while Maddox is off running around the country, Reed and Falcon are having a little trouble in paradise. You see, Reed and Maddox are BFF’s and Reed is hiding the fact that he has some communication with Maddox while the rest of the family has been cut off completely. The fact that she’s keeping this huge secret has put a strain on her relationship with Falcon. She’s pulling away from him. The guilt is eating her alive. The couple is also dealing with the decision to postpone their wedding until Maddox returns. He’s too important to the family and they can’t imagine their wedding day without him.
The portion from the POV of Lila Felix was definitely a little bit different. I know that the characters are like the authors babies, friends, maybe even family, but something about putting yourself into the story and acting like you’re visiting them was a little bit much for me. I have to admit that part of me thought it was extremely creative but still…it just wasn’t for me.
I can honestly say that it was a good story, I just wanted more. I wanted to connect more with the characters. Lila Felix is one mean story teller, and I will gladly read anything she writes. This book and I just didn’t happen to click. There was a lot going on from a lot of different POV’s. I will say that I CANNOT wait to find out what’s going on with Nixon, though. I have a feeling that his story will be one that I will not be able to put down.
