His life is exactly the way he’s always wanted it to be…stable.
She’s quite possibly the very definition of unstable.
Noah saved her.
Georgina never wanted to be saved.
Growing up, Noah Clark was passed from one relative to the next until he finally ended up living with his abusive, alcoholic uncle in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Thanks in part to the unwavering love and support of his best friend, Ellie Turner, Noah survived those years, escaped his uncle, and grew into the man he is today. Now he runs his own business and lives a pretty normal, no-nonsense life—one where he maintains a high level of control.
Georgina is Ellie’s younger sister. Four months ago, Noah saved Georgie’s life, but he thought that was where his involvement with his friend’s sister would end. Now Georgie has returned home from the recovery facility her parents sent her away to and Noah, still haunted by the night that connects them, can’t stop himself from continuously trying to protect this girl he barely knows. But is he willing to give up all of the control he’s worked so hard to build in his life and risk everything for her? Even more importantly, would she do the same for him?
When I cracked this book open I had just come off the doom and gloom of a similar type novel – one that dealt with suicide, depression, and abuse. Up-lifting reading material to say the least. I had expected Kill Devil Hills to have the same black cloud hanging above it. What I got was slightly different.
If you’re going to write about suicide you have to be all in or all out. There is no wishy-washy middle ground when it comes to taking your own life. That doesn’t mean your character has to succeed in their attempt. That’s not what I mean at all. I mean that their pain doesn’t just go away after a few months. Suicide is a very permanent solution to a temporary problem. My issue with Georgina is that once she excited the treatment facility she magically so easily seemed to see the error of her ways. I don’t think it usually works that way. It’s almost as if Kill Devil Hills teeters on the edge of dark but doesn’t quite fall in.
Noah and Georgina have known each other for years, yet somehow they barely know one another. I guess the six year age difference is supposed to explain that away. You’d think that if you spent days on end at Georgina’s house and was BFFs with her older sister, you’d get to know her by default, right? It shouldn’t take finding her bloody body on the bathroom floor to make you realize you wanted more with the girl. Or ever realize that she IS a girl. Just sayin’.
Noah comes with his own set of luggage. Has more baggage than any one human should. He has been through a lot. Noah lived with a few family members after his parents proved to be anything but parents. The last of which was an abusive uncle. He has scars of his own, they may not run up and down his arms but they’re there. They lurk under the surface helping to dictate how he lives his life.
I wish there was more behind the suicide attempt. Does that makes me a horrendous human being? Eh. Losing your brother has to be hard – super hard – but it is not enough of a reason to take your own life. Don’t you think he’d be pissed at you for doing that? I know if I had a sister and she attempted to take her own life because I’d passed on I’d be majorly ticked.
It didn’t take long to zip through Noah and Georgina’s story. Like I said earlier, I liked the premise, I just expected to delve deeper into the world of suicide. The few tiny scraps we’re thrown in relation to future novels in this series has hooked me. I can’t wait to learn more about Sydney, Ellie, Rose and the rest of the gang. There are so many different stories that could branch off of Noah and Georgina’s it is ridiculous.
Sarah Darlington lives in Virginia with her husband and crazy-active 2-year-old son. She’s a former flight attendant, day-dreamer, traveler, and wannabe photographer. Her debut novel HE BELONGS WITH ME was released March 2014. KILL DEVIL HILLS will be the first book of a three book series. Each novel in this new series will feature a different couple’s story.
