(A re-imagining of my young adult book, The Fallen Star, told as a New Adult Paranormal)
For twenty-one year-old Gemma, life has never been normal. She knows nothing about her past and has been haunted by the same monsters in her nightmares for the last few months. Unemotional and numb to life, she feels disconnected from everyone. Until the very first day she cries. After that, nothing in her life is the same.
Her emotions slowly surface and she starts experiencing love, happiness, and anger, feelings she never knew existed. But they leave her confused and she doesn’t know whether to embrace them or run away from them.
Her life only gets more complicated when she meets Alex. Sexy, arrogant, and secretive, Alex can get under Gemma’s skin like no one can. Yet she’s drawn to him by an invisible connection she has no control over. She’s also seen him before. In her nightmares.
Every part of Gemma’s mind is screaming at her to stay away from Alex, but every other part of her is begging to get close to him. But the closer she gets, the more she realizes Alex knows more about her than he originally let on.
As secrets about her past unravel, Gemma’s life becomes threatened. She needs to figure out what’s going on, before she winds up dead. But the only person she can turn to for answers is the one person she isn’t sure she can trust.
I’ll admit that I am not usually a huge fan of the paranormal. Vampires, werewolves, and things that go bump in the night are just too far-fetched for me. When I first learned that Jessica Sorensen was re-working her novel The Fallen Star into more of a new adult paranormal, I was intrigued but skeptical. I fell in love with Jessica’s writing after reading The Secret of Ella and Micha. Then along came The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden, which completely blew my mind. I held off for on purchasing Shattered Promises simply because it was so radically different from the novels I generally gravitate to. I can honestly say that I am glad I stepped outside of my comfort zone; it was well worth the leap of faith.
From the outside, Gemma looks like a typical 21 year old college student; on the inside she is anything but. Raised by her cold and unloving grandparents after her parents’ untimely death, she has spent most of her life in isolation. Gemma feels absolutely nothing. No pain, sadness, guilt, remorse or even happiness. She just simply exists; she’s numb. It’s no way to live, but it’s the only way she knows.
One day, for unknown reasons, everything changes. Suddenly she can feel things she never has before. She finds herself drawn like a magnet to a man she’s never seen before. Alex seems to be everywhere. He invades her life in ways she never thought possible. Gemma begins to see things which can’t be explained and suffers from disturbing lust filled nightmares. The more she learns about the world around her, the more she finds out about herself. Things aren’t always what they seem.
With the help of Alex, his sister Aislin and Laylen, a well-meaning vampire, Gemma begins to piece together her life. But what happens when the people you’re trusting are holding back vital information?
Shattered Promises is the perfect blend of paranormal and new adult. The book is filled with love – or should I say lust, passion and realism mixed in with the world of fantasy. Jessica has this way of introducing large amounts of information without it being overwhelming. I had no trouble following the story line and connected easily with the characters. Now that I’ve read through the first book in the series, I’m anxious for the next. Gemma is such a strong female lead and she’s up against unspeakable odds. I want so badly for her to find her happily ever after. She deserves nothing less.
