Ophelia Brand’s life is in shambles. Married to an abusive man and forced to act like the perfect politician’s wife in public, her freedom has been completely stripped away. Alone and without purpose, Ophelia feels as if there isn’t much in this world to live for. Everything changes when an employee kidnaps her from a state dinner. Ophelia is thrust into a new world filled with people who claim to be an ancient race of Mages. They also claim that she is one of them.
While the country falls into the hands of a tyrannical dictator, Ophelia finds herself torn between the friendly Reece who wants nothing more than to protect her, and Spencer, the leader of the resistance who sees her as a tool to fight the war. Tensions run high as Reece and Spencer both try to help her master her powers and unravel the spells that restricted her from using them. As revelations of her past come to light, and the war is brought to her feet, Ophelia must quickly make a choice of who to trust.
Ophelia Brand is trapped in a loveless abusive marriage. She’s tried to escape the pain inflicted on her before, but her husband, Donovan’s high ranking position in the government makes freedom almost impossible. Fearing for her life after arriving late to a public function, Ophelia is ordered to return home by her horrid husband to await what is sure to be an intense beating. Only, Reece, Ophelia’s driver, has other plans. He took over as her chauffer 2 weeks ago when James, her previous driver, retired. Instead of bringing Ophelia home to wait for her punishment, he brings her to a strange building which holds unimaginable information. It’s there that she learns what she truly is and that her husband’s evil torture extends well past the walls of her lavish home.

Ophelia must now decide who is worthy of her loyalty and trust. Can she trust Spencer, leader of the group which has “kidnapped” her? Reece, her protector and chauffer? Or Cass, Reece’s “little sister?” As Ophelia uncovers more information it becomes obvious that no one is what they seem. Sadly, she may find that the only person she can truly trust is herself.
“For cripes’ sake, I have just learned that I am one of those fantastical magical people who doesn’t know anything about how to use magic. What could surprise me now?”
Binds was a phenomenal read. From the very first sentence I was carried away into another world. A world with mages and fairies, kings and queens. It was beautifully written and not at all over the top. I’m usually hesitant to read paranormal lit because it is just simply too far-fetched. I didn’t feel that way at all while reading Rebecca’s work. I fell in love with Ophelia right from the start. She’s strong yet vulnerable and unsure. All the information she has to take in and process would have given me a nervous breakdown, but she takes it all in stride.
The sexual tension/mini love triangle between Ophelia, Spencer and Reece is spellbinding. It’s very hard to get a firm grasp on either of the two men “fighting” for Ophelia’s affection (Donovan doesn’t count because he’s a worthless piece of dog… well, you get the point.). Rebecca does a phenomenal job of making you question their integrity from time to time. Mostly Spencer’s… They are both strong, bright, capable men who have been through more than their fair share of pain. Ophelia finds herself drawn to both men, but after incurring the wrath of Donovan Brand, she’s hesitant to give her trust to anyone. Completely understandable if you ask me.
I CANNOT wait for the next book in this series. This is a series, right? Please tell me there will be another book. It can’t end like that. There are too many questions that need answers. Too many relationships left hanging in the balance. Too much up in the air. I can’t even begin to imagine where this story is going, but I will gladly jump on board and enjoy the ride.
