*The Dumont Diaries was originally released as a four-part miniseries. This book combines the four pieces of the miniseries into one, full-length novel. It will be available as an ebook and a paperback book.
I wrestled a bunch with how many stars to give this book. In the beginning, I was a little apprehensive about the story. It seemed so farfetched.
It was cruel of my mind to ever convince my heart that I had a chance.
Here’s the deal, Candace racked up an ungodly amount of credit card debt. Her degree in event planning was a bust. Okay. I get that. Who hasn’t run into a little credit card debt after making one too many purchases, most likely for things you can’t even remember?! That being said, I would NEVER jump to becoming a stripper. I’d default on those bad boys faster than you can say “cracker”. No. Freakin’. Way. Of course, in my case, it may have more to do with the fact that I’d probably fall off of the stage, or get booed off for my lack of dancing skills. Hey, we’re not all perfect ballerinas. Some of us DON’T have moves like Jagger…
I think I’m getting a head of myself here…
What I’m trying to say is that Part one, of this four part book, took a little getting used to. I couldn’t comprehend how this sweet girl had to remove her clothing, gyrate on a pole and give blow jobs to make ends meet. There had to be some other way. It’s just so…extreme.
Enter Pretty Woman meets 50 Shades of…somethin’
Candace ‘Candy’ Tapers works at a lower level strip club. We’re not talking high roller territory here. So, when a mysterious man walks in and demands her time in the VIP section, she’s shocked to find he’s not only gorgeous but loaded. His first visit calls for a private dance and a BJ. This earned Candy an easy 3K. Maybe easy isn’t the best word choice, but you get the picture. Mystery man, known to Candace as Blue Eyes, comes in on a few other occasions over a 9 month span. Each time she dances for the man and pleases the little friend he has in his pants.
One unexpected night, Blue Eyes wants more. He wants Candy to go out of the club with him; share a night at a local hotel, see where the evening takes them. After much trepidation, Candy agrees – for a cool 10K.
Things don’t exactly go as planned. Candace and Blue Eyes don’t end up at a hotel. Instead, this mysteriously sexy man takes Candace back to his place. They have some kinky sex romps in front of the help and in the morning, Blue Eyes, now known as Nathan Dumont, has presented her with a proposal. He would like to have her as his wife. Now don’t get excited ladies and gents, this is not your typical marriage. Nope. Nathan wants a wife in theory. He wants to be photographed with her, looking every bit the happy couple, but he doesn’t want to live that life. He does however, want her for his sexual needs. Apparently she’s a dynamo in the sack.
Candace reluctantly agrees. After this point, everything goes bat shit crazy. There are more twists and turns in this book than a maze. Lord knows, I was stumped a few times. Let’s just say that if I were Candy, I would have high tailed it out of that place. Yikes.
I don’t want to say too much. I don’t want to give away too much. Ugh, this is hard. That’s what she said… I’m sorry. I had to. This book is tough because it’s divided into four parts. Each part leaves you with a tiny cliff hanger. It’s actually pretty fabulous. I couldn’t stop myself from reading just one more page, one more chapter, one more part. It was a slippery slope and I found myself sliding down that sucker at a high rate of speed.
Candace wants love. She wants a fairy tale ending. Even though she’s tried to convince herself she doesn’t expect it, or even want it, she does. At one point she even begins to turn to Drew, Nathan’s security guard/right hand man, to do the job. Nathan can’t provide the intimacy that Candace needs so maybe Drew can. Er, or not. Again, thinks get complicated.
The only real issue with I had with The Dumont Diaries, is that it felt unfinished. I had tons of unanswered questions, and Candace was still harboring some pretty hefty secrets. I want to know what happens! Will there be more drama? Will Nathan be cool with Candy’s secrets? Will she still go by her new name? Inquiring minds want to know…
You see, it’s just a very tangled web… A lot of lies. A lot of deceit. Maybe even a little love. It’s one giant bowl of fucked up. And I loved every spoonful.
Anger seeps through me in waves, commingling with frustration and leaving me furious. Why is he so difficult? Am I that irritating? My mere presence that unbearable to his peace of mind? My clothes, the proper blend of luxury and sex, are suddenly thick and constricting, the tight wool-blend top ridiculous in the summer humidity. I feel a sudden surge of recklessness, pushed relentlessly by the wave of hot claustrophobia that seizes my entire body. I yank at the sleeveless turtleneck, pulling it over my head, feeling a moment of euphoria when the hot fabric hits the white pavers. My skirt follows, one quick zip down. I stare at my nude thigh-high lace stockings, ridiculous given the fact that they were put on solely for his eyes. There’s no need for stockings in June, slid on in the pathetic hope that he might, on this day, grant me a session with his cock. I slip out of my heels, rolling the expensive sheer fabric down my long legs, flipping my head up to find him and Drew staring at me through the glass, an expression of horror on Drew’s face. Nathan simply watches, a cold look of disinterest in his eyes. Oh, look. There is my wife. Throwing a temper tantrum in front of the staff.
I stare into his eyes, my body covered by only a sheer shelf bra and a barely existent thong. I can only hope my eyes communicate the fury radiating through my body, my hurt at his neglect, at his snub of me and the corner of his world that I inhabit. Then, I dive.
The water shocks me. I am forbidden from the pool, my hair stylist repeatedly preaching the harm that chlorine will cause to my now-expensive tresses. Nathan agreed, adding a new rule to my long list. No swimming. So I am unprepared for its cool embrace, the smooth grip of moisture that instantly refreshes my sticky skin, sliding bubbles across my surface. I come up for air, the sun’s heat suddenly friendly and warm on my face, tickling me as it slides droplets of water off my face. Then I duck back into the underwater world and don’t come up for quite some time.
